Tourist attractions in Sighetu Marmației

The Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance: Was created and is administered by the Civic Academy Foundation. The greatest victory of communism, a victory dramatically revealed only after 1989, was to create people without a memory – a brainwashed new man unable to remember what he was, what he had, or what he did before communism. The creation of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance is a means of counteracting this victory, a means to resuscitate the collective memory.

The Village Museum: As you see it today, leaves the impression of a typical village from Maramures. One straight road and several crooked roads or paths make up the inherent structure of the settlement and they all converge as in all Maramures villages, towards the church.

Maramures Ethnographic Museum: The current collection of the Ethnographical Museum from Sighet, organized after a modern concept, was completed and has been available to the public since December 1971. The exhibits are displayed in open circuit rooms, structured according to the main categories of folk culture.

Elie Wiesel Memorial House: In this house from Sighetu-Marmatiei, the Nobel Prize Winner, Elie Wiesel has spent his first 15 years of life. In 1944, Elie Wiesel together with his family and other 38.000 Jewish people from Maramures were deported to Auschwitz, Birkenau and Buchewald by the Natzi regim. In August 2002 Elie Wiesel himself opened the doors of the memorial house.
